I took a short vacation last week, and, as always, I overpacked.

Which was a good thing.

Because when I overpack, it’s because I’ve thought about what might go wrong (or right) on my travels and what tools or resources I might need in any situation.

I know this sounds like I might be packing everything, including the kitchen sink, but it’s not really like that.

Because I follow a rule my podcast partner, Lee, shared with me, my overpacking has a purpose: I’m prepared for whatever (within reason) problem or situation that shows up.

That rule? “It’s better to be looking at it than looking for it.”

Lee’s thought process is that it’s better to be prepared and have what you need available to you than to find yourself in a situation where you need something, and you don’t have it.

Lee uses the example of going out on his boat with his family. Before heading out on the water, he obviously thinks about what he will need, like life vests, food, water, and gas.
